Site description (2000 baseline)
A raised bog and forest, including highly valuable areas of mature (nearly primary) Fagus, Quercus and Tilia woodland.

Key biodiversity
Numbers of breeding birds have declined at this site over the last 20 years and Tetrao tetrix has not bred since the 1980s. Nevertheless the site remains an important area for heathland and wetland birds and more recently some species' populations have started to increase as a result of habitat restoration efforts. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Pernis apivorus, Circus aeruginosus, C. pygargus, Tringa glareola, Chlidonias niger, Asio flammeus, Dryocopus martius and Lanius collurio.
