Site description (1994 baseline)
An area of mangrove on the southern Red Sea shore, 30 km north-west of al-Birk. A shallow, muddy bay with large stands of Avicennia marina. The subtidal zone is sandy with seagrass beds. There is a local fishery.

Key biodiversity
See box for key species. Other breeding species include Butorides striatus and Pandion haliaetus, and possibly Pelecanus rufescens (also winters: max. 21), Platalea leucorodia, Acrocephalus stentoreus and A. baeticatus.

Non-bird biodiversity: Mammals: Dugong dugon (V).
