Site description (2000 baseline)
An extensive area of aapa mire in central Lapland, close to the Russian border. The peatland is bisected by numerous rivers and rivulets, which are bordered by Picea abies swamps and mire meadows. Areas of coniferous boreal forests are relatively scarce.

Key biodiversity
An important area for boreal avifauna.
