Site description (2000 baseline)
An area of shallow coastal waters comprising lagoons, sandbanks and beaches. Also included are coastal grasslands, marshland, heather Calluna moorland, wet heaths and some cultivated land. Ten percent of the area at the lower end of Falsterbo is a golf course.
Key biodiversity
The IBA is a major migratory bottleneck site, where more than 20,000 raptors regularly pass in spring and autumn (mainly Pernis apivorus, Accipiter nisus and Buteo buteo). Large numbers of passerines also pass through, with 1,100,000 Fringilla coelebs and Fringilla montifringilla having been recorded on a single October morning. The area is also important for wintering wildfowl. A total of 340 species have been recorded, with yearly totals exceeding 200 species.
