Site description (2007 baseline)
Daikokujima islet is an uninhabited islet 3 km off shore from Akkeshi Town, and is 1.1 km2 with a perimeter of 6.1 km. In 1951, a part of the southeast island (11% of the whole area) was designated as a Natural Monument by the government because of sea birds breeding ground. A lot of Leach's Storm-petrel, Slaty-backed Gull, Japanese Cormorant breed here. A few Spectacled Guillemot and Tufted Puffin used to breed, but now we seldom observe them.
