Site summary
This site is comprised of the Cerová vrchovina hills and Rimavská kotlina lowlands. The area consists of agricultural land with dispersed trees, pasture, and deciduous forest (thermophilous oak, beech, oak-hornbeam, ravine and slope forests). Rock and wetlands habitats, and rural settlements are also present. The area is used mainly for forestry and agriculture. In Rimavská kotlina crops are grown intensively; whereas Cerová vrchovina is used for cattle and sheep grazing, as well as tourism. The area is hunted intensively. The region is an important nesting site for bird species supported by open land (mosaic agricultural land, pastures), forest, rock and wetland habitats. The main threats to birds include intensive forestry, solitary tree felling (e.g. avenues of poplar containing populations of Lesser Grey Shrike), land abandonment, intensive agriculture, use of pesticides, unsuitable timing of hay making, sand (nesting sites of Bee-eater) and stone quarrying. The site is proposed as an SPA.
