Site description (2012 baseline)
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within the Western Sahara Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Atlantic, Eastern FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 31180 km2 and is 22 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 2343 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.8 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 18.62 and 22.07 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 1.59 and 7.31 mg/m3.
Key biodiversity
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 14-99 individuals of Cory's Shearwater (LC) from are present at the site during the Post-guard (Aug-Oct) life-history stage. 283160-582723 individuals of Cory's Shearwater (LC) from Vila, Pantaleu, Chafarines, Veneguera, Selvagems and Berlenges are present at the site during the Non-breeding (Nov) life-history stage.
