Site summary
The Boni National Reserve (1,339 km²) and Dodori National Reserve (877km ²) lie on the north-east coast of Kenya near the Kenya-Somalia border, i Lamu and Garrisa counties in far eastern Kenya. At South 01°43', East 041°10 at an altitude of 0-100m. The two sites have been recognized for the conservation of biodiversity of global importance by being listed with the Eastern Arc Mountains and Coastal Forest of Biodiversity Hotspot (Burgess, et all., 2003) for containing endemic and globally threatened biodiversity.

The two forests have also become very important for the conservation of the globally threatened mammal species. like the critically endangered Ader's Duiker Cephalophus adersi .Sightings of the endangered Wild dog Lycaon pictus and the endangered hirola Beatraus hunteri have been recorded before (Githiru et al, 2007).

The forests that lie between the two sites are not legally protected. The indigenous Awer and Watta people who live within the forest believe the Boni forest is their own and do not understand the implications of gazettement.

The soils are infertile and mostly sandy, they loose their fertility after a few years leading to opening of more areas.
