This species is suspected to have a small population that is declining within a very small range, confined to the islands of Grand Comoro and Anjouan. It is therefore listed as Near Threatened.

Population size: 1000-2499 mature individuals

Population trend: decreasing

Extent of occurrence (breeding/resident): 2,650 km2

Country endemic: yes
