Justification of Red List category
This distinctive megapode has undergone a exceedingly rapid reduction population inferred from the abandonment of more than two-thirds of known nesting grounds and the rapid reduction in numbers visiting the remaining active sites over the past three generations. Only at a handful of sites actively managed for the species and where there is no exploitation is the species expected to persist. In addition, lowland forest is being lost at a moderate to rapid rate throughout the range. As such it is assessed as Critically Endangered. Reductions are expected to continue although the concentration of the remaining population in the protected sites may result in a slowing of the rate over the next three generations.
