Site description (2000 baseline)
A large complex of six adjacent mires just north of the Simo river. Practically all types of mires of the Kemi-Tornio region are represented. Kivalo, a 10-km-long series of hills, extends through the area, supporting old forests of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies.

Key biodiversity
An important area for Arctic and boreal avifauna, especially for waders. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (max. 11 individuals, passage and wintering).
