Mainly a limestone massif comprising a number of peaks over 2,000 m, surrounded by the towns of Djakovica, Pec and Kosovska Mitrovica. Alpine vegetation occurs at high altitude; coniferous, mixed and broadleaved forests (spruce Picea, pine Pinus, maple Acer, beech Fagus, oak Quercus and chestnut Castanea) are present at lower levels.
The site is important for a variety of breeding raptors and other upland species, including four of the 10 species in Europe that are restricted (when breeding) to the Eurasian high-montane (alpine) biome. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (breeding).
