Site description (2000 baseline)
A shallow fjord with shoals and banks. Islets and coastal areas support saltmarsh, forest and agricultural land, and smaller areas of plantation and heathland.
Key biodiversity
Numbers of wintering Cygnus olor and Branta bernicla have decreased markedly since 1980 because of reductions in eel-grass Zostera, on which both species feed. Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis and S. paradisaea, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
