Kalimantan lowlands - Secondary Area

Country/Territory Indonesia
General characteristics

This Secondary Area is defined by the range of the threatened Black-browed Babbler Malacocincla perspicillata (classified as Vulnerable), known from a single specimen, probably collected near Martapura (3°31'S 114°45'E) (or possibly near Banjarmasin, 3°22'S 114°33'E) (Mees 1995), in the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Selatan (see map, p. 484). It is probably a forest bird, and its habitat is likely to be under pressure from lowland deforestation (see RePPProT 1990, Collins et al. 1991). The lowland rain forests of Borneo also support several widespread threatened species (Collar et al. 1994). This Secondary Area is adjacent to the Bornean mountains (EBA 157), but the birds of that area mainly occur in montane habitats at higher altitudes.
