Justification of Red List category
This species is listed as Near Threatened because it is restricted to a small range, in which tree cover loss is proceeding slowly.
Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as uncommon and local (Collar et al. 2020).
Trend justification
There are no data on the population trend. The only potential threat known to the species is the loss and degradation of its forest habitat. Over ten years, tree cover loss is low within the range (3%; Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein) and the species is known to also occur in dense secondary habitat (Collar et al. 2020). Therefore, tree cover loss is not thought the be affecting the population and in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threat, the population is suspected to be stable.
Cichlopsis peruviana is found in the Cordillera Oriental in central Peru.
The species occurs in humid and wet mossy forest, as well as in dense secondary growth (Collar et al. 2020). Its ecology remains largely unknown.
The species is threatened by forest loss for conversion into livestock pastures and into agricultural fields throughout its range. Currently, tree cover loss is low and large tracts of undisturbed habitat remain within the range; however, large-scale logging activities are occurring in lower elevations in close proximity to the species' range (Global Forest Watch 2022).
Conservation Actions Underway
No targeted actions are known.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Conduct surveys to get more accurate knowledge of the species' range, population size and trends. Investigate the species' ecology and behaviour. Monitor the population trend. Monitor rates of habitat loss. Attempt to protect areas of remaining habitat.
