Taxonomic note

Nucifraga caryocatactes, N. hemispila and N. multipunctata (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as N. caryocatactes following AERC TAC (2003), Cramp et al. (1977-1994) and Sibley & Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: In Europe, the total population size is estimated at 596,000-1,220,000 mature individuals, with 298,000-608,000 breeding pairs (BirdLife International 2021), and comprises approximately 20% of the species' global range, so a very preliminary estimate of the global population size is between 2,980,000-6,100,000 mature individuals, although further validation of this estimate is desirable. In Europe, the species' population is considered to have remained relatively stable over three generations (14.28 years) (BirdLife International 2021). This species is considered to have a high dependency on forest habitat, which is estimated to be declining at a rate of 7.4% over three generations within its mapped range (Global Forest Watch 2024). It is therefore tentatively suspected that this rate of cover loss may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame, with a best estimate of reduction being 5-9%. Based on these data, the global population trend is considered to be declining.
