Taxonomic note

Cichlopsis leucogenys, C. chubbi, C. peruviana and C. gularis (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as C. leucogenys following SACC (2005 and updates), Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993) and Stotz et al. (1996).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified. In Ecuador, the species is described as scarce and very local, though locally common (Collar et al. 2020); the population is thought to number 1,000-2,500 mature individuals (Freile et al. 2019). There is no information on the population size in Colombia, but the species is infrequently recorded (GBIF.org 2022). Precautionarily it is suspected that the population in Colombia is roughly of equal size than the population in Ecuador; to account for uncertainty the total population is here placed in the band 2,500-9,999 mature individuals.

Trend justification: The population is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction and degradation. Tree cover loss within the range is very low (<2% over three generations; Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). The species is strictly dependent on forests; therefore population declines may be aggravated by additional habitat degradation. Nevertheless, population declines are likely to be slow, not exceeding 10% over three generations.
