LC
Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer Chalybura urochrysia

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note
Geographically isolated subspecies intermedia was included in the previous concept of Chalybura urochrysia (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) but is now included with C. buffonii, based largely on its greater similarity to the plumage of C. buffonii, especially in blue tail colour. Race melanorrhoa long considered a separate species, presumably on basis of its sooty-black vent (no other notable character), but intergrades with isaurae along border of Costa Rica with Panama. Proposed subspecies incognita (E Panama) probably best treated as a synonym of isaurae. Three subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population is suspected to number 500,000-4,999,999 mature individuals (Partners in Flight 2022). The species is described as 'uncommon' (Stotz et al. 1996).

Trend justification: This species is suspected to be in decline, which is thought to be caused by habitat loss (Stiles et al. 2020).
Tree cover loss within the range amounts to 4% over ten years (Global Forest Watch 2021, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Given that the species avoids open areas (Stiles et al. 2020), population declines may be steeper than the rate of habitat loss suggests; they are here tentatively placed in the band 1-9% over ten years.
