Taxonomic note
Psilopogon australis, P. cyanotis and P. duvaucelii (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously placed in the genus Megalaima and lumped as M. australis following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be common to locally common (del Hoyo et al. 2002).
Trend justification: Although thought to be relatively adaptable and tolerant of habitat degradation, the species is nevertheless inferred to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction and fragmentation per Tracewski et al. 2016.
