Justification of Red List category
This recently described species is suspected to have a small population, which is declining slowly owing to habitat loss. It is consequently classified as Near Threatened.
Population justification
The population is preliminarily estimated to number at least 10,000 individuals, roughly equating to at least 6,700 mature individuals. This value however requires confirmation, and an accurate quantification of the population size is urgently required.
Trend justification
The only threat known to this species is the loss, degradation and fragmentation of its habitat. Over the past three generations (12.3 years), 4% of tree cover has been lost within the range; however since 2016 tree cover loss has been accelerating to a rate equivalent to 6% over three generations (Global Forest Watch 2021, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Population declines are therefore unlikely to exceed 10% over three generations.
Pyrilia aurantiocephala is known from to the Lower Madeira, Upper Tapajós and Teles Pires rivers in Amazonian Brazil.
Individuals have been seen in gallery forest and in 'campinarana' forest (on white-sand soils) in humid lowlands (Fjeldså and Boesman 2020). Records of the species range from 15 m to 278 m above sea level (GBIF.org 2022).
The only threat known to the species is the loss of its habitat through logging (Gaban-Lima et al. 2002). Currently, tree cover within the range is lost at a rate of up to 6% over three generations (Global Forest Watch 2021, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein).
Conservation Actions Underway
CITES Appendix II. No targeted actions are known for this species.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Survey to produce an accurate estimate of the population size. Study its ecology, habitat requirements and behaviour. Assess potential threats to the species. Monitor the population trend. Effectively protect core areas of habitat within its range. Raise awareness for the species and its habitat.
