Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The site is dominated by maquis, phrygana and limited arable land. A small lake and some saltpans are included. There are many mines and quarries.
This is an important site for migrating waterbirds and species associated with coastal cliffs and scrub. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Aythya nyroca,
Falco naumanni (5 breeding pairs),
Larus audouinii.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The most serious threat is from the existence and expansion of the mines and quarries. Tourism is limited to the beaches at Achivadolimni. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.
