Skjern Å

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A large river valley with meadows, marshes, moorland and cultivated areas. The Skjern å river has been canalized and has the highest rate of flow of any in Denmark.

Key biodiversity
This is an important staging area for Cygnus columbianus. No quantitative data are available and recent data are incomplete. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (breeding).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
An important extensive restoration project is underway which includes `re-meandering' the lower part of the river. It is hoped that the project will help restore the former importance of the site for scarce breeding birds such as Crex crex. Several of the side rivers have been severely polluted by ochre as a result of extensive drainage schemes.
