Site description (2022 baseline):
Site location and context
Planalto Norte is an area in the north of the Tope de Coroa Natural Park, which is characterized by having vegetation adapted to a semi-arid climate, represented by endemic species such as Euphorbia tuckeyana, Nauplius daltoniii vogelli and Artemisia gorgonum. There are several volcanic cones, the highest ones is the Tope de Coroa, a young cone that developed inside an older crater. It has steep slopes on its west side, while on the south and east areas, there is a vast plateau at more than 1400 meters of altitude. The area exposed to the north has a higher percentage of plains cut by a series of streams, probably caused by erosion. In contrast, the western slope is characterized by its aridity, while the north-northeast part has a denser vegetation cover that prevents the erosion of the soil covered by dark volcanic sand. Natural Park has almost no vegetation, but in some areas, there is semi-natural vegetation which is overexploited by free grazing.
The fauna found in this area is represented by Pterodroma feae and Hydrobates jabejabe
