Site description (2000 baseline)
A small wetland situated 20 km east of Kars, adjacent to the road between Kars and Digor. To the south of the road are 15 ha of open water, with a rich submerged flora (mainly Potamogeton) and a mosaic of emergent sedge-beds. The area to the north is largely seasonal. The lake lies on a vast elevated plateau, covered largely by extensively grazed steppe-grassland.

Key biodiversity
The area is important for breeding waterbirds.
