Gaole Shan Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located in the north-east of Tongbai County, bordering Xinyang City to the east, Queshan County to the north and Miyang County to the west. The IBA is higher in the north and slightly sloping to the south, and mostly comprises high mountains and river valleys. It is the origin of the Wuli He and Maoji He rivers, which flow into the Huai He river.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Many nationally and procvincially protected plants such as Gingko. About 30 species of large mammals recorded including leopard cat, pangolin, goral etc. Giant salamander also found in this site.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 2003
