Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The IBA comprises two lakes separated by an extensive marsh with reedbeds (
Phragmites) and wet meadows, situated at the foot of Büyük Aðrý mountain (Mount Ararat). Saz or Kurtkapan lake is fed mainly by surface run-off whilst Gölyüzü or ªeyhli lake is fed by Balýk lake (site 091). The lakes are covered mainly by reed, with large parts drying up in summer. The plains surrounding the wetland are grazed, and reed-cutting takes place (`Other' land-use).
The site is also important for breeding waterbirds. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Aythya nyroca. According to the limited information available, the site was more important in the past.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
No serious threats are known at the site.
