Coastal peninsula with an enclosed brackish lagoon, grazing-meadows and shallow fjord area with shoals, banks, intertidal flats and saltmarshes.

Key biodiversity
The numbers of most wintering and passage species have declined markedly since 1983 (formerly more than 20,000 waterbirds), when the site was designated as a Special Protection Area. The most recent available breeding bird data are from 1988 when several species, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, were recorded breeding at the site, including Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo and S. paradisaea.
