General characteristics
This area is defined by the range of its one endemic species, Brown-headed Paradise-kingfisher Tanysiptera danae, which occurs only in south-east Papua New Guinea, west in the north to the Waria river and west in the south to the Aroa river (see map, p. 550). The species frequents primary and gallery forest, mainly in hills and foothills up to 800 m, and very locally in the lowlands (Coates 1985). Three other restricted-range species-Painted Quail-thrush Cinclosoma ajax, Olive-yellow Robin Poecilodryas placens and White-bellied Whistler Pachycephala leucogastra, which have disjunct distribtions in five other New Guinea EBAs-also occur there.
