BirdLife's Global Species Programme collates and analyses information on all the world’s birds in order to set priorities for action, through species-specific initiatives, safeguarding of sites, campaigns and policy interventions. BirdLife is the IUCN Red List authority for birds, classifying species in terms of the risk of extinction.

Seabirds and marine issues are covered by the Global Seabird Programme, and the BirdLife Preventing Extinctions Programme aims to save all globally threatened birds with a priority focus on Critically Endangered Species.

BirdLife International maintains its own taxonomic checklist of all the world's bird species. To findout more about BirdLife's approach to taxonomy and to download the full list of species please go to our page on Taxonomy.
