Taxonomic note
Trachylaemus purpuratus, T. goffinii and T. togoensis (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously placed in the genus Trachyphonus and lumped as Trachyphonus purpuratus following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be not uncommon (del Hoyo et al. 2002).
Trend justification: The species requires forest with dense undergrowth, therefore population is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction and fragmentation (del Hoyo et al. 2002).
