Population justification: The global population size has been estimated as over 100,000 individuals. The species is described as widespread and common (Madge and McGowan 2002).

Trend justification: The species is declining over much of its range owing to habitat degradation caused by under story cutting and over-grazing as well as over-hunting and collecting of eggs (del Hoyo et al. 1994).
