Cinnyris afer, C. stuhlmanni, C. prigoginei and C. ludovicensis (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously placed in the genus Nectarinia and lumped as N. afra following Dowsett & Forbes-Watson (1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as locally common (Cheke and Mann 2016).

Trend justification: Anthropogenic habitat destruction and erosion of stream banks by cattle pose threats to the species’s habitat (Cheke and Mann 2016), and so the species is inferred to be in decline.
