Ptilinopus porphyraceusP. fasciatusP. ponapensis and P. hernsheimi (del Hoyo and Collar 2014) were previously lumped as P. porphyraceus following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the pre-split P. porphyraceus was reported to be common to abundant (del Hoyo et al. 1997, Gibbs et al. 2001).
