Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as fairly common during the breeding season in north India, Nepal and Bhutan; scarce and local in Pakistan, uncommon in central Myanmar and northern China and very common in Sri Lanka (del Hoyo et al. 2006). Brazil (2009) has estimated the population of China at < c.10,000 breeding pairs (Brazil 2009).
Trend justification: The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats.
