Taxonomic note
Mirafra apiata and M. fasciolata (del Hoyo and Collar 2016) were previously lumped as M. apiata following Dowsett & Forbes-Watson (1993) and Sibley & Monroe (1990, 1993).

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as locally common and widespread, although patchily distributed in the north of its range (del Hoyo et al. 2004).
Trend justification: The population is estimated to be in decline following a recent recorded range contraction owing to urban expansion, as well as the threat of habitat loss to agriculture (del Hoyo et al. 2004).
