Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as generally common throughout the Indian Subcontinent, although uncommon in Bhutan (Grimmett et al. 1998). National population sizes have been estimated at c.10,000-100,000 breeding pairs and c.1,000-10,000 individuals on migration in China and c.10,000-100,000 breeding pairs in Taiwan (Brazil 2009).
