Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as widespread in the north of its range (del Hoyo et al. 2001).

Trend justification: The species is suspected to be in decline owing to increased river pollution and increased water turbidity caused by introduction of Cyprinus carpio (del Hoyo et al. 2001).
