Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as generally common throughout the Indian Subcontinent, although uncommon in Bangladesh (Grimmett et al. 1998). National population sizes have been estimated at c.10,000-100,000 breeding pairs and c.1,000-10,000 individuals on migration in China and < c.50 individuals on migration and < c.50 wintering individuals in Taiwan (Brazil 2009).
