Justification of Red List category
This newly-split rhea has been precautionarily listed as Near Threatened as declines in its population may have been moderately rapid over three generations (c.33 years) owing the effects of egg collection and hunting. Uncertainties remain over the taxonomic status and over the population size and trend of the taxon and it may be reclassified in the future.
