Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Australia Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Indian Ocean, Eastern FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 1460 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 58 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 15.41 and 15.63 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.38 and 0.88 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Westernport Bay, Phillip Island include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Fairy Tern (VU) 2-108 individuals and Short-tailed Shearwater (LC) 1350000-1350000 individuals.
