Site description (baseline)
The Sierra del Bálsamo highlands could potentially qualify under criterion A3. The site contains 45% of PAS Biome species (5 species of the 11 indicator species, although two of the 5 are only suspected to occur). If Campylorhynchus rufinucha is considered a PAS Biome species, then the site contains 50% of the indicators, but this species is found in extremely disturbed habitats and at all PAS sites in El Salvador, so should not been used to evaluate the proportion of the PAS bird community at proposed IBAs. Because all of El Salvador is in the PAS biome, and too many sites have the presence of more than 33% of the PAS indicator species, the IBA coordinator and local contributors/reviewers agreed to increase the threshold for selection to 50%, thus excluding the present site from meeting the A3 criterion. A nearby site, Deininger, located on the lower slopes of the Sierra del Bálsamo, is also proposed as an IBA and meets the A3 criterion for the PAS Biome. - O. Komar 2007.
