Site description
An extensive range of mountains situated near to the Polish border. They form the northernmost and highest part of the Western Carpathians. The IBA includes the Eastern Tatras (High Tatras and Belanské Tatras), Western Tatras and part of the Podtatranská basin. The subalpine vegetation consists mainly of Pinus scrub, while the montane zone comprises Picea forest. Forests of Betula, Abies and Acer occur in the Belanské Tatras, and submontane areas consist of grassland, arable land and artificial habitats.

Key biodiversity
An important site for breeding species of forest and subalpine meadows; Pernis apivorus and Lanius excubitor also breed.
