Area: 4,270 ha
Site description
An area of sandbanks and shallow waters, with a small reedbed and an embanked grassland polder, along the Frisian south coast. It is a subsite of Lake IJsselmeer (034).
Key biodiversity
The site is an important roost for geese Anser (from Noordoostpolder) and waders, but no recent counts are available. Non-breeding numbers are based on aerial counts which tend to underestimate species with a scattered occurrence. This is the main moulting area for Podiceps cristatus in the Netherlands (up to 20,000). The mean total number of wintering waterbirds exceeds 20,000.
