It originates from the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Atlantic, Antarctic FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 14069 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 627 m and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 0.65 and 1.41 °C.
3 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; South Georgia - mainland, islands, islets and stacks include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Imperial Shag (LC) 15483-20128 breeding pairs, White-chinned Petrel (VU) 6000000-6000000 breeding pairs and Antarctic Tern (LC) 3750-7125 breeding pairs.
