Site description (baseline)
A large coastal area with estuarine mudflats, sandbanks, saltmarsh, lagoons, wet meadows and freshwater marshes. Intensively used for sheep-grazing, wildfowl hunting, military training and oil, sand and gravel extraction.

Key biodiversity
Part of the Wadden Sea, of major international importance for breeding, moulting, passage and wintering waterbirds, particularly wildfowl (Anatidae) and waders.
