The site comprises part of the former flood-plain of the now embanked River Rhine. Habitat-types include riverine forest, relict Alnus swamp-forest, springs, gravel-pits, reedbeds (Phragmites), dry grassland, meadows, arable land and orchards. An introduced species of herb (Solidago) is spreading within the native vegetation.
This is an important stop-over site for passage wildfowl, and is nationally important for breeding Sterna hirundo.
