Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Peru Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Pacific, Southeast FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 3427 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 1209 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 16.89 and 19.45 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 1.58 and 5.37 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
7 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Río Tambo y Lagunas de Mejía include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Inca Tern (NT) , Red-legged Cormorant (NT) , Peruvian Tern (EN) , Guanay Cormorant (NT) , Humboldt Penguin (VU) , Peruvian Pelican (NT) and Peruvian Booby (LC).
