Two shallow, eutrophic, freshwater lakes located in the depressions of a drained fen. The Galenbecker See (depth 0.5-1 m) has reedbeds (Phragmites), mudbanks and large vegetated areas that are slowly silting up. The Putzarer See (depth 0.25-0.5 m) has reedbeds and extensive vegetated areas. Human activities include fishing (mainly in the Galenbecker See), with grazing and forestry in nearby areas.
