This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Canada Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Arctic Sea FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 2438 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 371 m and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 0.02 and 0.96 °C.
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Prince Leopold Island include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Black Guillemot (LC) 6000-11400 individuals and Thick-billed Murre (LC) 3-167700 individuals.
