Recent numbers of visiting birds (notably Aythya fuligula) are lower than in 1983 when the site was designated a Special Protection Area. In harsh winters, Bucephala clangula and Aythya fuligula meet A4i criteria. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Botaurus stellaris, Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea, S. albifrons, Dryocopus martius and Lullula arborea.
